“India is the world’s largest democracy. As G20 chair, India launched several initiatives that benefit the global community. Now, there is a significant opportunity to carry forward the strong foundation we laid in the G20 and translate it into action through the G7. India has always embraced such opportunities for the global good—and will continue to do so in the future,” he said.

“It’s a great honour to host you at the G7,” Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told PM Modi, adding, “Your presence here is a testament to the importance of your country, your leadership, and the shared priorities we aim to address- from energy security and the transition you are helping to lead, to the future of artificial intelligence, the fight against transnational repression, terrorism, and more. End Of Diplomatic Freeze Between India And Canada
India-Canada relations plunged to a historic low last year following the killing of pro-Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in 2023. Then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau publicly accused Indian agents of involvement in the killing- claims New Delhi strongly denied, calling them “absurd” and instead accusing Canada of harboring extremist elements. In the months that followed, both countries expelled diplomats, froze trade negotiations and dramatically scaled down bilateral engagement.
Mark Carney Signals Course Correction
The diplomatic tone has shifted since April 2025, when economist-turned-politician Mark Carney succeeded Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister and extended the G7 invitation to PM Modi.
“As chair of the G7, it is important to invite the most important countries to talk about issues such as energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals—and India is really at the very centre of global supply chains,” Mark Carney had said ahead of the summit.
