Actor Sandhya Mridul has shared a video saying her mother took a young woman who works as help at her home for a haircut, but one salon and then another refused to cut her hair. Mridul said the incident left her angry and saddened, and she used the post to speak about dignity, respect and kindness towards domestic staff.

Sharing the video, she wrote, “Every person deserves dignity, respect and kindness. Not because of what they do for us, but because they are also human.” She added that domestic staff are not invisible, and that they care for homes and families and often become family themselves. Mridul said watching a young woman in her 20s being turned away from a salon simply because of who she was left her deeply saddened. “The hurt of rejection is universal and dignity should never be a privilege reserved for a few,” she wrote, adding, “A little kindness, respect and humanity cost nothing. Let’s do better.”

Mridul also said she was not naming the salon because it is a private salon in the building where her mother lives and she wanted to protect her privacy. She said the purpose of the post was not to name one establishment, but to address a larger issue. “The issue is much larger than one establishment. It’s the mindset. That’s what we need to change,” she wrote.

In the video, Mridul said something had happened that had “really pi***d me off”. She said her mother first took the young woman to a salon where staff refused to cut her hair. They then went to another salon, which also refused. Mridul said her mother, who is usually a gentle person and not someone who fights, argued at the second place, requested and pleaded with them, and even offered to pay a little more because the young woman was feeling bad. She said the salon eventually agreed to give her a haircut, and that her mother then took her out for lunch because she was upset.

Mridul said she could not imagine how the young woman must have felt and asked what kind of time people were living in if they still behaved like this. She also spoke about buildings where domestic workers are not allowed into certain spaces, and said the problem was not limited to salons or people guarding lifts. “It’s us, many of us, who are asking for this, who are saying, please don’t allow these people into salons, please don’t allow these people into elevators,” she said. She added that such behaviour needed to change and called it “ridiculously shitty behaviour.”
