Sensex Today: Indian equity benchmarks ended higher on Thursday, May 15, boosted by easing trade tensions after US President Donald Trump announced that India had agreed to reduce tariffs on American goods. The development lifted investor sentiment and supported a broad-based rally across sectors.

The BSE Sensex surged to an intraday high of 82,718.14 before closing at 82,530.74, up 1,200.18 points or 1.48%. Barring IndusInd Bank, which slipped 0.24%, all 29 other Sensex stocks closed in positive territory.

Tata Motors led the gains with a 4.16% jump, followed by HCL Technologies (3.37%), Eternal (2.22%), and Adani Ports (2.19%). The Nifty 50 also ended firmly above the 25,000 mark, settling at 25,062.10 with a gain of 395.20 points or 1.6%.

During the session, the index moved within a range of 24,494.45 to 25,116.25. In the broader market, the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indices rose by 0.70% and 0.54%, respectively. All NSE sectoral indices closed with gains, reflecting widespread buying interest.

Meanwhile, the India VIX, which measures market volatility, eased by 1.93% to close at 16.89, indicating reduced investor anxiety.

Global Cues

Across the Asia-Pacific region, markets were largely trading in the red due to muted global cues. Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 1.09%, while the Topix slipped 1.04%. In South Korea, the Kospi was down 0.24%, and the Kosdaq dropped 0.66%. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 saw a marginal decline of 0.07%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index retreated 0.5%. China’s CSI 300 also fell, down 0.93%.

Overnight in the US, equity indices ended mixed. The S&P 500 rose 0.10% to close at 5,892.58, and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.72% to settle at 19,146.81. However, the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.21% to finish at 42,051.06.

US stock futures were also trading lower in early Asian hours. S&P 500 futures were down 0.19%, Dow Jones futures declined 0.39%, and Nasdaq futures fell 0.11%, indicating a cautious start ahead of Powell’s remarks.
