Sensex Today: Benchmark equity indices — the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty — extended their winning streak to a seventh straight trading session on Wednesday, powered by strong gains in information technology (IT) stocks, even as banking shares saw some profit-taking.

Tracking positive global cues, the BSE Sensex opened with a sharp gap-up of 548 points at 80,142 and surged further to touch an intraday high of 80,255. However, the index later trimmed gains and briefly slipped into the red, hitting a low of 79,507, mainly due to selling pressure in banking counters. Eventually, the Sensex ended the day with a gain of 521 points, closing at 80,116 — its highest close in calendar year 2025. Over the past seven sessions, the benchmark has jumped 6,269 points or 8.5 per cent.
