Zahaan Kapoor, who is also grandson of the legendary actor Shashi Kapoor, is carving a unique space for himself in the entertainment industry with his second project, Black Warrant. Despite being part of the iconic Kapoor family, Zahaan remains steadfast in his resolve to build his own identity through his work.
In an exclusive interview with India Today Digital, Zahaan spoke candidly about his approach to navigating the weight of his legacy. For those unaware, Zahaan’s first project was Hansal Mehta’s Faraaz. During the release, Zahaan never positioned himself as someone’s grandson. Explaining why, Zahaan told us, “I think it was also a conscious choice [to not position myself as Shashi Kapoor’s grandson].”

He shared, “Because at the end of the day, I want my work, my effort, my intentionality, and my honesty to speak for itself. I understand that people will, anyway, make a reference. People will, anyway, have an expectation. But I don’t want to push that agenda. That’s just my personal take. It is what it is.”
Zahaan also expressed immense pride in his lineage but stressed the importance of focusing on the craft and the story being told. “I’m very proud of the family I come from, and I’m very grateful for the education they’ve given me, especially my parents, for grounding me and encouraging me. But I believe the story is the most important thing.”
Reflecting on his debut with Faraaz, he explained why he refrains from highlighting his familial ties: “How tone-deaf would it have been if I made the story of Faraaz about Shashi Kapoor’s grandson? It’s so incorrect in a sense.”
Meanwhile, the 2025 Indian Hindi-language crime drama thriller, currently streaming on Netflix, is based on the acclaimed 2019 non-fiction book Black Warrant: Confessions of a Tihar Jailer by Sunil Gupta and Sunetra Choudhury. Created by Vikramaditya Motwane and Satyanshu Singh, the series features Zahaan Kapoor in the lead role as Sunil Gupta, with a stellar supporting cast that includes Rahul Bhat, Paramvir Singh Cheema, and Anurag Thakur.
