In summer, dehydration often turns urine dark yellow. While some mistake it for jaundice, it’s usually a result of excessive heat and fluid loss from sweating

In summer, the body sweats more, leading to various health issues. One of the main concerns during this season is the risk of water loss, known medically as dehydration. Dehydration can cause symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, and weakness. Due to the lack of water, many people notice that their urine turns dark yellow in the summer. While some assume this may be a sign of jaundice, in many cases, it is simply due to excessive heat.

Speaking to News18, Dr Amarendra Pathak, Vice Chairman of the Urology Department at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, explains that urine is typically light yellow, but it becomes darker during summer due to dehydration. As temperatures rise, the body sweats more to regulate internal heat, leading to the loss of water and electrolytes. This loss of fluids results in concentrated urine, giving it a darker yellow hue. Dr Pathak advises people to drink 3 to 4 litres of water daily during summer to stay hydrated and maintain normal urine colour.

If you are passing dark yellow urine, increasing your water intake can help. The colour usually returns to normal as hydration improves. However, if your urine remains dark yellow despite drinking plenty of water, it could be a sign of jaundice or a urinary tract infection (UTI). In such cases, a medical consultation is essential.

Does UTI Risk Rise in Summer?

Dr Pathak confirms that the risk of urine infection does indeed rise during the summer months. A key reason is dehydration, which leads to concentrated urine. In this state, harmful bacteria are not effectively flushed out of the body and may accumulate in the urinary tract, increasing the risk of infection. Furthermore, excessive sweating creates an environment where bacteria thrive. The use of public toilets and swimming pools, which is more common in summer, also contributes to a higher risk of infections.
