Extreme body weight—whether too low or too high—can quietly sabotage fertility in both men and women.
A recent 2025 study reported that nearly 75% of women seeking fertility treatment were either underweight or overweight, showing how widespread weight-related fertility problems have become.
Many couples in India remain unaware that extreme body weight, whether too low or too high, can seriously affect fertility in both women and men. From a medical standpoint, maintaining a healthy weight is essential for reproductive health. In women, both underweight and overweight conditions disrupt the hormonal balance needed for regular ovulation.
Obesity, in particular, can more than double the risk of ovulation-related issues. This concern is reflected in clinical observations; a recent 2025 study reported that nearly 75% of women seeking fertility treatment were either underweight or overweight, showing how widespread weight-related fertility problems have become.

Men are also equally affected. Obesity is now seen as a major cause of male infertility globally. It is linked to lower testosterone levels and reduced sperm quality, which makes conception more difficult. Hormonal changes caused by excess weight can impair sperm production and overall reproductive function. Nonetheless, this is one of the few risk factors that can often be improved with lifestyle changes.
A balanced diet combined with five days of brisk walking or running and two days of resistance training each week can greatly support hormonal balance. It’s important not to pursue rapid weight loss; instead, a gradual and consistent approach will help restore reproductive health more effectively. With timely intervention and support, many can improve their fertility outcomes and move closer to their goal of starting a family.
