President Donald Trump terminated the Secret Service detail of his former national security adviser John Bolton within hours of taking office.
Bolton has been the subject of assassination threats by Iran, and left the White House after a falling out with Trump in 2019. On social media, Bolton said he was disappointed but not surprised by the decision, having previously warned of a reckoning coming for Trump’s enemies. He said the threat against him “remains today”.
While the White House would not confirm the decision to strip Bolton of his protections, the president himself acknowledged it during a press conference yesterday.
“We’re not going to have security on people for the rest of their lives. Why should we?” Trump said. As president, he himself is guaranteed Secret Service protection for the rest of his life.
Fox News has shared the details of the letter Joe Biden left to Donald Trump in the drawer of the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office. Leaving a letter for one’s successor has been a presidential tradition since Ronald Reagan and Trump called the words “inspirational” and “very nice”.
According to Fox, the letter reads:
“Dear President Trump,
As I take leave of this sacred office I wish you and your family all the best in the next four years. The American people – and people around the world – look to this house for steadiness in the inevitable storms of history, and my prayer is that in the coming years will be a time of prosperity, peace, and grace for our nation.
May God bless you and guide you as He has blessed and guided our beloved country since our founding.”

He’s made it to his third day in office – hump day US time – after spending much of the first two firing people. But tensions are already emerging in Trump’s new cabinet of loyalists and billionaires.
Elon Musk, one of the president’s closest advisers, has made an unusual break with the White House by questioning Trump’s first major tech announcement – the $800 billion joint-venture “Stargate” between OpenAI, SoftBank and Oracle to build vast power-intensive computing infrastructure for artificial intelligence, some of which is already underway.
On his social media platform X, Musk claimed the venture didn’t have the money required. “SoftBank has well under $10B secured. I have that on good authority,” he wrote.
Meanwhile, the Justice Department has vowed to prosecute state officials who refuse to enforce the Trump administration’s mass deportation plan, according to a leaked department memo. It comes as the Pentagon sends 1500 more troops to the US border with Mexico, and Homeland Security prepares for targeted raids into cities with large numbers of undocumented immigrants.
