Two separate cases involving allegations of kidnapping and forced religious conversion have surfaced in Lucknow, raising fears of ‘love jihad’ and prompting police investigations.
The developments come after similar allegations surfaced at King George’s Medical University last year, adding to concerns over a pattern of such incidents in the city.
‘THREATENED TO SEND HER TO SYRIA’
In the first case, a resident of the SGPGI residential campus has complained about the disappearance of his 21-year-old daughter. In the other, a woman has filed an FIR against Zubair Ansari and several members of his family, alleging that she was deceived, blackmailed, financially exploited and pressured to convert her religion.

According to the family in the first case, the 21-year-old left for work on May 21, 2026, but did not return home. Family members said CCTV footage tracing her movements has been secured and handed over to investigators.
The family has accused a man identified as Irshad Ali of taking their daughter away. The complaint says Ali was known to the family and had been a frequent visitor to their home.
The family has further alleged that complaints had earlier been lodged against him, but no effective action was taken. They have also accused a doctor associated with SGPGI of aiding the accused.
According to the family, Ali first visited their home during Raksha Bandhan, when the young woman tied a rakhi on his wrist, and later became a regular visitor.
They have alleged that he subsequently began harassing her through phone calls and created obscene images of her. The parents have also claimed that when they objected to his behaviour, he threatened to send their daughter to Syria.
‘PRESSURED TO CONVERT TO ISLAM’
In the second case, the woman said in her complaint that Zubair Ansari concealed his identity, befriended her, promised to marry her and later entered into a physical relationship with her.
She further alleged that videos recorded during the relationship were later used to blackmail her. The complaint also accuses the accused of financial exploitation.
According to the FIR, the woman was pressured to convert her religion and was allegedly forced to recite Islamic prayers and perform religious practices. She also alleged that she was assaulted and threatened when she resisted.
Police have said investigations are under way in both cases. Officials said all allegations are being examined impartially and added that further legal action will depend on the evidence that emerges during the probe.
REVISITING THE 2025 KGMU CASE
The latest cases have drawn attention back to a 2025 case at KGMU.
In that matter, a resident doctor in KGMU’s MD Pathology department, identified as Rameez Uddin Nayak, was accused of sexually exploiting a colleague on the false promise of marriage, pressuring her to convert to Islam, and blackmailing her with private photographs and videos.
According to the FIR in that case, Nayak befriended the complainant and entered into a physical relationship with her after claiming that he was unmarried and intended to marry her. The woman alleged that when she later sought to formalise the relationship, he made conversion to Islam a precondition for marriage.
She subsequently discovered that Nayak was already married and living with his wife in Lucknow. When she tried to distance herself, he allegedly threatened to circulate her private images.
The complainant also alleged that she became pregnant in September and was compelled to undergo a medical abortion. She claimed that the exploitation continued despite repeated assurances of marriage.
