“High blood pressure during pregnancy poses significant risks to both the mother and the fetus. It can lead to complications such as preeclampsia, which may result in organ damage, seizures, or premature birth. Other risks include low birth weight, restricted fetal growth, and placental abruption. Additionally, maternal hypertension can contribute to long-term cardiovascular issues. Early detection, consistent monitoring, and proper care are critical to ensuring a healthy pregnancy and reducing the risk of adverse outcomes,” adds Dr Shaw.

Gestational hypertension—typically beginning after 20 weeks of pregnancy—is distinct from chronic or pre-existing hypertension. Women are advised to adopt a healthy lifestyle even before conception to lower their risk of developing pregnancy-related hypertension. This includes engaging in doctor-approved physical activities, following a well-balanced, low-sodium diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and maintaining a healthy weight.

Avoiding alcohol and smoking, managing stress, and attending regular prenatal checkups are essential. Staying well-hydrated and following medical guidance can significantly reduce the risk of pregnancy-related hypertension and its associated complications.
