Amid work stress, fatigue, and daily pressures, sleep is a vital tool for maintaining health. However, while proper rest is beneficial, artificially induced or “fake” sleep, often associated with alcohol use, can be harmful. Experts note that those who believe they sleep better after drinking may be under a false impression, as alcohol disrupts the quality of sleep rather than enhancing it.

Celebrity nutritionist Pooja Makhija recently addressed this issue in an Instagram post. She explained that alcohol does not induce genuine sleep but rather unconsciousness.

According to Makhija, “Sleeping after drinking alcohol increases your Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, which reduces overall sleep quality. It also disrupts your circadian rhythm, or ‘internal clock,’ particularly when the effects of alcohol start to wear off after midnight.”

Research by the Sleep Foundation also supports these claims, showing that alcohol negatively impacts sleep. Consuming alcohol before bed can disrupt sleep, leading to fatigue the following day. In fact, 90 percent of people who regularly drink in the evening or at night report sleep-related issues and face numerous problems upon waking.

One major consequence is an increase in cortisol levels, causing individuals to wake up around 3-4 am. Despite sleeping for 6-7 hours, many still feel tired, irritable, and lethargic the next day, alongside experiencing dehydration. This is because, while the body may be in bed, it is not truly resting. This cycle can lead to repeated drinking in an attempt to achieve better sleep, perpetuating the problem.

Experts recommend avoiding alcohol to ensure better sleep and prevent the dangers associated with fake sleep.
