Hyderabad: Telangana ministers and senior officials on Saturday, June 6, inspected arrangements at the Nampally Exhibition Grounds ahead of the annual fish prasadam distribution on June 8, with the government expecting large crowds from across the country for the event held on the occasion of Mrugasira Karthi.

State Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, who is the minister-in-charge for the event, reviewed distribution counters, queue lines and barricading at the venue alongside Fisheries Minister Vakiti Srihari, Rajya Sabha MP Anil Kumar Yadav and Fisheries Corporation Chairman Mettu Saikumar.

The distribution, which begins at 9 am on June 8 and will continue through June 9, involves the Bathini family’s 176-year-old tradition of administering a herbal preparation placed inside a live Murrel fish to patients free of charge. It is believed to provide relief from asthma and breathlessness.

The Fisheries Department has arranged approximately 1.4 lakh high-quality Murrel fishlings for the event.

What’s been put in place

Prabhakar ordered fans and coolers to be installed along queue lines given the summer heat and directed officials to ensure uninterrupted power supply, drinking water and standby generators. Ambulances and medical camps are being set up, with CPR teams deployed to monitor queues continuously.

Police have been directed to maintain round-the-clock surveillance through closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras and a dedicated control room at the venue, with specific instructions to prevent stampedes and manage traffic in the Nampally area. SHE Teams will be deployed and public announcements made to guard against pickpocketing.

Voluntary organisations will provide breakfast, meals and accommodation to out-of-state visitors, as they do every year, officials said.

Fisheries Minister Srihari said all departments were working in coordination to ensure the event proceeds smoothly, and both ministers said they would remain on-site until the distribution concluded.

District Collector Dr Priyanka Ala and Additional Commissioner of Police Tafseer Iqbal also conducted a separate inspection of the venue, reviewing drinking water supply, electricity, stage setup and VIP queue arrangements.
