The inspection was carried out on September 24 under Mission Nikhara, a drive announced by Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Rizwan Arshad to ensure accurate measurement and protect consumer interests.
The Legal Metrology Department inspected LPG bottling units across Karnataka and weighed 1,530 filled cylinders.
25% CYLINDERS FOUND BELOW DECLARED QUANTITY
Of the cylinders checked, 382, or 25%, contained less gas than the declared quantity but remained within the permissible error limit.

Another 205 cylinders, or 13.4%, contained exactly the declared quantity, while 943 cylinders, or 61.6%, contained more gas than the declared quantity.
The department said three cases were booked during the exercise and fines totalling Rs 79,000 were collected.
The inspection covered 17 operational bottling units. These included four each of BPCL, HPCL and IOCL, two TotalEnergies units and three private bottling units. One of the four private units listed in the press note was non-functional.
CONSUMERS CAN ASK FOR LPG CYLINDERS TO BE WEIGHED
Arshad said consumers have the right to receive the quantity they are entitled to under prescribed standards. He also urged consumers to have their LPG cylinders weighed at the time of delivery.
Under government rules, LPG marketing companies and distributors are required to provide delivery personnel with weighing instruments.
Consumers can ask for the cylinder to be weighed before accepting the delivery. Those who suspect a violation can report it to the Legal Metrology Department’s helpline at 1800 599 1100.
The department’s inspection is aimed at ensuring that consumers receive the quantity of LPG they have paid for, while keeping measurement standards under check.
