A labourer died and another was critically injured after two private workers fell into a municipal sewer manhole while carrying out drainage clearance work at a housing society in Mumbai’s Santacruz East on Monday.
The incident took place at around 11 am at Bhavya Niketan society.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the housing society had hired private personnel to clear its internal sewer line. The workers were not BMC employees.

While the drainage work was underway inside the society’s compound, a municipal sewer manhole was opened without informing BMC staff. The two labourers subsequently fell into the open manhole.
FIRE BRIGADE RESCUES TWO LABOURERS
The BMC Fire Department was alerted and rescued both labourers from the sewer manhole. They were taken to V N Desai Hospital for treatment.
According to information received from the hospital, two unidentified persons were brought in following the incident. One of them was declared brought dead, while the other was admitted to the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) for further treatment.
The BMC said the two labourers had been privately engaged by the housing society for drainage clearance work and were not its employees.
