Two pregnant women have died, and a third remains in critical condition after allegedly being administered the wrong injections at a Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) hospital over the past three months, triggering allegations of medical negligence and demands for accountability.

The latest case involves Sonam Dongre, who was eight months pregnant and had been admitted to Rajmata Jijau Municipal Hospital in Airoli. She died during treatment on Wednesday. The deaths have raised concerns over patient safety and treatment protocols at the civic-run facility.

Amid growing outrage, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) staged a protest and demanded a thorough investigation into the incidents. MNS city president Gajanan Kale, along with party workers, met Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Kailas Shinde and sought strict action against all those found responsible.

During the protest, MNS workers removed their shirts inside the commissioner’s office in what they called a “Kapde Utaro Andolan” (Strip Protest), alleging serious lapses in the municipal healthcare system.

The civic administration subsequently suspended a senior gynaecologist in connection with Dongre’s death. According to officials, the doctor was found prima facie negligent in handling the case. The suspension was ordered under provisions of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act and Maharashtra Civil Services Rules.

However, MNS leaders said action against a single official was not enough and demanded that all officers and employees found guilty of negligence be held accountable. The party warned that it would intensify its agitation if further action was not taken.

The protest ended after the suspension order was issued, but the controversy surrounding the deaths continues, with demands mounting for a comprehensive inquiry into the alleged lapses at the hospital.
