The Pitt led the charge as the most nominated series of the year with 25 nods, followed closely by The Hacks, which scored 24.
The Pitt won the Emmy for best drama last year and is favoured to repeat the victory this year. It also racked up eight acting nominations for its main cast including past winners Noah Wyle and Katherine LaNasa, and picked up another five in the guest acting categories.
Its closest competition is newcomer Pluribus, which was nominated for a series gong, as well for its actors Rhea Seehorn, Karolina Wydra and Carlos-Manuel Vesga.
Hacks’ final season received a lot of love, and picked up a comedy series nomination as well as nods for its stars Jean Smart, who has won for every season so far, Hannah Einbinder, Paul W. Downs and Meg Stalter. It also scored six nominations in the guest acting stakes.
New series Widow’s Bay also had a lot to celebrate, picking up nominations for comedy series and stars Matthew Rhys (a double nominee – also for his role in The Beast in Me), Kate O’Flynn, Stephen Root and Kate Dickie, as well as for writing and directing. The horror-comedy looks to be a force.
In the limited series race, DTF St Louis appears to be the frontrunner, scoring nominations for series, and for five actors, Jason Bateman (a triple nominee – also nominated for acting and directing in Black Rabbit), David Harbour, Linda Cardellini, Richard Jenkins and Joy Sunday. That suggests there’s a lot of support for the series overall.
Other multiple nominees this year include Laurie Metcalf (Hacks and Monster: The Ed Gein Story), Colman Domingo (The Four Seasons and Euphoria) and Nick Offerman (Margo’s Got Money Troubles and Death By Lightning).
But it wasn’t happy news for everyone. Stranger Things didn’t score any major nominations for its final season, and the Emmys have officially fallen out of love with The Bear.
After being such a dominant presence, the series has missed out on a raft of nominations, securing only three nods in the major categories, for best comedy series, lead comedy actress for Ayo Edebiri and directing.
Series star Jeremy Allen White was pushed out of contention, as were previous winners Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Liza Colon-Zayas, who were all blanked. The Bear did manage to pick up a couple of guest acting nods for Jamie Lee Curtis and the late Rob Reiner.
But it’s not the end of the line for The Bear. This year’s Emmys are for the show’s fourth season, the fifth and final instalment, which was released two weeks ago and was better received, will be eligible for next year’s ceremony.
Some of the more surprising but delightful nominees were Riz Ahmed’s comedic turn in the limited series Bait, Chase Infiniti for Handmaid’s Tale sequel series The Testaments, and Yayha Abdul Mateen II, who picked up a comedy lead actor nod for Marvel series Wonder Man.
For Heated Rivalry obsessives, Connor Storrie picked up a nomination for his guest spot on Saturday Night Live. As a wholly Canadian production, the hockey romance itself was not eligible.
The Australian contingent is light this year. Among the major categories, only Sarah Snook snuck in, for her performance in the miniseries All Her Fault, which was filmed in Victoria.
The Emmys ceremony will be broadcast on Monday, September 14 AEST.
