A 59-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh has become a government teacher after nearly three decades of trying, clearing multiple recruitment exams and facing several failed attempts along the way.
Vijay Kumar Sharma has now been selected as a TGT Sanskrit teacher at an aided secondary school in neighbouring Shamli district, achieving a goal he had pursued since 1999.
Sharma, a resident of Badhwad village in the Baraut area of Baghpat, received his appointment letter from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at a programme held at the Indira Gandhi Pratishthan in Lucknow on September 22.

For him, the letter marks not just a government job, but the end of a 27-year wait during which he continued to study and reappear for recruitment processes.
Over the years, Sharma cleared the TGT written examination six times and the PGT examination four times. He also appeared for interviews around eight times, but was never included in the final list.
After every setback, he returned to his books and continued preparing. This time, the recruitment process did not include an interview, and Sharma was finally selected.
He had spent nearly 26 years teaching in private schools while preparing for government recruitment examinations. He taught Hindi and Sanskrit at Vivekanand Vidyapeeth and Doon Public School.
According to Prashant Jain, director of Doon Public School, Sharma would teach students during the day and continue preparing for competitive examinations alongside his work.
Teaching was already part of the family, as his father, Laxman Singh, was also a teacher.
Sharma’s two sons are working with the Uttar Pradesh Police, while one of his three daughters has also been selected for a teaching post and is currently on the waiting list.
Sharma saw the years of rejection not as a reason to stop, but as a chance to improve his preparation. He believes age should not become a barrier to achieving a goal if a person keeps making an effort.
Now, at 59, he is set to join a government school as a teacher after a long and persistent journey.
