Hyderabad: The Commissioner’s Task Force, Charminar Zone, in coordination with the Attapur Police, arrested three members of a gang on Friday, October 30, for allegedly procuring mule bank accounts and illegally selling them to cyber fraudsters linked to Rs 10.04 crore.
The gang was busted following a tip-off that it was accessing mule bank accounts for use by cyber fraudsters, rather than the account holders, to commit offences.
Investigation revealed that the arrested accused supplied the accounts for Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000. Police found 83 mule accounts across 22 bank branches, with 11 of them linked to 14 cyber fraud transactions involving approximately Rs 10.04 crore across multiple states.
Interrogation revealed that two of the accused, identified as Syed Abbas Ullah Hussaini and Mohammed Talha Khan, had been procuring mule accounts in various banks with the help of local persons.
According to the police, the accused used to receive bank account kits containing the account number, passbook, ATM card, ATM PIN, linked SIM card and customer ID. Hussaini then handed over the kits to Vijay and Babu Lal through courier and received money in return, the release said.
Examination of the arrested persons’ mobile phones showed that they operated by engaging local persons to open bank accounts in several cooperative banks in the city.
The police cautioned people not to rent, sell, lend or share their bank accounts, ATM cards, cheque books, SIM cards, UPI IDs or internet banking credentials with unknown persons or third parties for monetary benefits.
