For lakhs of UGC NET aspirants, the wait for the answer key has now become a test of patience. More than a month after the June 2026 examination concluded, candidates are still awaiting the provisional answer key and a clear timeline for the declaration of results.
With silence from the National Testing Agency (NTA) continuing, a section of students has now drawn a line in the sand: release the answer key by August 10, or face a student gathering outside the NTA office on August 11.

The anger is spreading across social media, where aspirants say the delay is no longer just an examination-related inconvenience. They claim it is affecting PhD admissions, Assistant Professor applications and other academic opportunities that depend on their UGC NET qualification.
‘40 DAYS, NO ANSWER KEY’: STUDENTS DEMAND ANSWERS
The UGC NET June 2026 examination was conducted in phases from June 22 to July 5. Since then, candidates have been waiting for the provisional answer key, which is normally followed by an opportunity to challenge answers before the final result is declared.
On X, one aspirant wrote that “40 DAYS” had passed with “NO ANSWER KEY” and “NO ACCOUNTABILITY”, claiming that more than seven lakh students were waiting while Assistant Professor vacancies and PhD deadlines were moving ahead.
The post laid out a clear warning: “10 AUGUST — RELEASE THE ANSWER KEY” and, if that did not happen, “11 AUGUST — STUDENTS AT THE NTA OFFICE.”
Another aspirant said the uncertainty had created a “strange kind of helplessness” among candidates who had studied, appeared for the examination and were now left waiting without clarity.
A separate post directly questioned the continued silence, saying students “deserve transparency” and asking the NTA to explain why the answer key had not yet been released.
PhD ADMISSIONS, JOB APPLICATIONS CAUGHT IN THE WAIT
For many candidates, the concern goes beyond simply knowing how they performed.
A UGC NET qualification can be important for Assistant Professor recruitment and PhD admissions, and aspirants say the delayed result is making it difficult to plan their next steps.
One candidate said their PhD admission plans and future prospects were being affected by the delay and appealed to the authorities to release the result-related information as soon as possible.
The uncertainty has also prompted candidates to ask whether the examination authority will provide a timeline at all, with some questioning what they describe as a lack of communication from the NTA.
PAPER-LEAK ALLEGATIONS HAVE ALREADY PUT NTA UNDER SCRUTINY
The growing anger over the answer key comes at a particularly sensitive time for the examination agency.
In July, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi raised allegations of a UGC NET Sociology paper leak, claiming that a confidential PDF containing nearly 90 questions matching the actual paper had been circulated before the examination. He alleged that a 100-page PDF was being sold for Rs 2.25 lakh in parts of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi and Rajasthan, and questioned the Centre and the NTA over examination security.
Those claims have not been established as fact. At the time of the India Today report, the NTA had not publicly responded to the specific allegation about the alleged leaked Sociology PDF.
The leak allegation came after UGC NET had already faced complaints over repeated questions, spelling errors, translation problems and syllabus-related concerns in some papers. The NTA acknowledged complaints concerning the Sociology paper and said it was examining the matter.
‘STUDENTS DESERVE TRANSPARENCY’
That backdrop has made the current silence particularly frustrating for candidates.
Students are not only asking “When will the answer key come?” They are also asking why there has been no definitive communication about the delay.
One social media post summed up the sentiment by asking why the NTA could not simply provide an update and give students a timeline. Another urged the authorities to communicate if there was any problem with the examination rather than leaving candidates to speculate.
For aspirants who have spent months preparing for the test, the uncertainty has become another hurdle after the examination itself.
AUGUST 11: WILL STUDENTS TAKE THEIR PROTEST TO NTA?
The proposed August 11 gathering is currently being driven by aspirants’ posts on X. The stated condition is straightforward: if the provisional answer key is not released by August 10, students intend to gather outside the NTA office the following day.
Whether the protest actually takes place will depend on developments over the next 24 hours.
But the message from aspirants is already clear. They want the NTA to end the uncertainty, release the provisional answer key and provide a transparent timeline for the remaining result process.
The UGC NET June 2026 controversy is no longer confined to the wait for an answer key. For candidates, every additional day of silence carries the fear of missing an academic or professional opportunity. With earlier complaints over the examination, fresh scrutiny following paper-leak allegations and now a growing student protest call, pressure is mounting on the NTA to communicate.
August 10 could therefore become a crucial date for UGC NET aspirants. If the answer key arrives, tensions may ease. If it does not, August 11 could bring the students’ frustration from social media to the gates of the NTA office.
