A US national who got caught in a rip-tide while spearfishing in Sydney has died in hospital.

Emergency crews rushed to Shelly Beach in Manly, in Sydney’s north, on Tuesday after reports that two men were in troubled waters.

The pair, one aged in his 40s and the other aged 20, had to be pulled from the water.

CPR was performed on the older man, who was unconscious.

However, despite the efforts of police and NSW Ambulance paramedics, he later died in hospital.

Police have since confirmed that he was a US national and had been spearfishing with the 20-year-old man before they were caught in a rip.

The other man was uninjured in the tragedy.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident and will prepare a report for the coroner.
