An elderly man has died after firefighters pulled him from a burning building in Sydney.

Emergency services rushed to a unit ablaze in Brown Rd, Bonnyrigg about 5.20pm on Tuesday after the alarm was raised.

Police and firefighters attended the scene, where they found smoking coming from the unit.

A man aged in his 80s was pulled from the blaze, with police performing CPR until paramedics from NSW Ambulance arrived at the scene.

However, despite the lifesaving efforts, the man died at the scene.

The man is yet to be formally identified, with investigations now underway into the circumstances of the fire.

A report will also be prepared for the state coroner.
