After nearly two weeks of sluggish progress and growing rainfall deficits across large parts of the country, the southwest monsoon is showing signs of revival.

Weather forecasts indicate that rain-bearing clouds will gradually regain strength over Central India, bringing much-needed relief to regions that have been waiting for widespread monsoon showers.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), isolated to scattered rainfall is likely over Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh, West Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha between June 19 and June 25.

The development signals a potential turnaround for Central India, which has emerged as one of the worst-hit regions during the ongoing monsoon slowdown.

Meteorologists say the return of cloud activity is significant because large parts of Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh have remained under clear skies and intense heat despite the official arrival of the monsoon season.

The delayed rainfall has contributed to rising agricultural concerns as farmers await sufficient moisture for kharif sowing operations.

RAIN, THUNDERSTORMS TO ROLL IN

The IMD has also forecast a series of thunderstorm events across the region.

West Madhya Pradesh is likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, between June 21 and June 23. Similar conditions are expected over East Madhya Pradesh from June 20 to June 23 and over Vidarbha from June 19 to June 23.

Chhattisgarh is expected to witness thunderstorms and lightning from June 19 to June 23, with stronger activity forecast on June 22 and June 23.

Before the widespread rains arrive, some areas may experience intense pre-monsoon weather. The IMD has warned of thundersqualls over West Madhya Pradesh on June 19 and 20, with wind speeds of 50-60 kmph gusting up to 70 kmph. Similar conditions are expected in East Madhya Pradesh on June 19.

The revival is not limited to Central India. Southern states are expected to remain among the wettest regions in the country over the coming week.

Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal from June 19 to June 21, while Kerala and Mahe could see heavy rain between June 19 and June 23.

The Karnataka coast is forecast to receive heavy rainfall from June 21 to June 25, with North and South Interior Karnataka likely to witness intense showers on June 22 and 23. Lakshadweep is also expected to receive heavy rain on June 21.

The forecast suggests that the monsoon, which appeared stalled after an early burst of activity, may finally be preparing for a broader resurgence.

While widespread heavy rainfall is still absent from many parts of north and central India, the increasing cloud activity and thunderstorm development indicate that the atmosphere is gradually becoming more favourable for the monsoon to resume its advance in the days ahead.
