US President Donald Trump loves to dominate public discourse. At the recently concluded G7 Summit in France, Trump ensured he remained the central figure, either with his theatrics or his viral “I am the boss” remark. Now, in an interview with Axios, the eccentric US President has revealed the reason behind the remark, describing it as a funny, light-hearted moment.

Earlier this week, Trump arrived late for a meeting with world leaders at the G7 Summit. As he strutted inside the room, Trump quipped, “I am the boss”, drawing laughter from the leaders seated across the conference table. Trump took centre stage at the summit after the US secured a peace deal with Iran, leading to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy corridor that handles 20% of the world’s oil flows.

TRUMP EXPLAINS ‘I AM THE BOSS’ REMARK

When asked by Axios about his viral remark and how many G7 leaders believe that, Trump was quick to assert, “All of them. But I was just being funny.”

After a pause, Trump emphasised that he wasn’t trying to be the boss, and the remark was meant to be “cute and funny”.

He then went on to elaborate on why he made the remark in the first place.

“What happened is they were all sitting, and then I walked into the room. It was just sort of funny because there was a very long table, but there were only seven of them. The table was meant for, like, 30 people,” Trump said in the interview.

Trump said the room looked like a perfect “podium-type set-up”. Trump must have felt all the world’s a stage for him.

Among the world leaders present for the session on trade and economy were Prime Minister Narendra Modi and France’s Emmanuel Macron.

“They are all well-known figures, right? The heads of countries — we had a couple of others in there too, as you know. Some, like, as an example, PM Modi of India – great guy. A lot of people came. They are allowed to come if they want and sit,” Trump said.

While India is not a permanent member of the G7, it is regularly invited as a special guest. It shows how much importance the key bloc now gives to India’s voice.

The US President suggested that the remark was a spontaneous one and was not scripted.

“I walked in there, these leaders, and I just looked at them. I said, ‘I’m the boss’. And you know that was done as a joke. This thing got carried all over the world. I can’t believe it. I was just being cute, funny. I wasn’t trying to be the boss,” he further said.

Trump concluded by saying that the G7 Summit was “tremendous” and “very dominant”. Trump said he “got what he wanted”.
