The concerns surrounding illegal infiltration returned to West Bengal’s political arena on Saturday, after the Border Security Forces (BSF) detained a group of Bangladeshi nationals in Malda and attempted to send them back to Bangladesh. However, while pushing them back, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), along with a large section of Bangladeshi nationals, obstructed the BSF, triggering a major row.

The incident has sparked tension among the residents of the border district and also drawn reactions from political circles. According to Piyush Mondal, a resident of Sukhdevpur village, “Nearly five to seven thousand Bangladeshi nationals tried to create a ruckus on the zero line. We also came to know that nearly 15 Bangladeshi nationals tried to enter the village, which the BSF prevented. We urge the government to fence the 1,200-metre stretch so that these people can’t enter,” Mondal said.

Another woman, identified as Chapala Mondal, said, “These Bangladeshi nationals tried to enter and our villagers, with the help of the BSF, resisted. These people enter our land and torture women and children. We demand border fencing as that will prevent incidents like this.”

As tensions flared, the BSF urged villagers not to approach the border area for some time. A red flag is also flying at the border.

JIHADIS CAME TO SUPPORT MAMATA BANERJEE, SAYS BJP LEADER

The incident has also drawn sharp reactions from Bengal’s political circles, with BJP leader Koustav Bagchi launching a scathing attack on Mamata Banerjee.

“No one is standing by her (Mamata Banerjee). Her trusted lieutenants have distanced themselves from her. She must have sought help from the divisive forces from the other side of the border, and they must have sent their people. However, the state is now ruled by the BJP government under the leadership of Suvendu Adhikari. These things will not be entertained,” Bagchi said.

Sukanta Majumdar, the Union Minister of State, however, asked people not to panic. He urged the Indian citizens to have faith in the BSF as they would successfully prevent the threat. BJP MP Shantanu Thakur, on the other hand, said that attempts were being made by Bangladesh to push its nationals to India; however, they would never be successful.

Infiltration was at the heart of BJP’s 2026 electoral campaign, with the central leadership promising an infiltration-less Bengal. Key leaders like PM Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah lambasted the Trinamool Congress for allegedly making Bengal a haven for the infiltrators.

After the party’s landslide victory in the elections, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, in his first cabinet meeting, announced the decision to hand over land for fencing the India-Bangladesh border.
