DELHI’S LATE MONSOON
The southwest monsoon is India’s main rainy season, bringing most of the annual rainfall to northern regions, including Delhi.
This year, it reached the capital on July 2, five days later than usual and marking the first July onset since 2021.
Before the monsoon arrived, Delhi had faced a long, punishing summer.
Earlier months saw severe heatwave conditions with temperatures often crossing 44°C. Even in the days leading up to the arrival of monsoon, the national capital and the surrounding regions faced humid conditions that pushed the temperatures higher.

The IMD had issued multiple alerts for extreme heat, forcing people to limit outdoor activity, especially during peak afternoon hours.
Nights remained uncomfortably warm, with minimum temperatures also staying high. Such conditions increase health risks like heatstroke and raise electricity demand for cooling.
The delayed monsoon brought initial showers and thunderstorms on July 2, giving quick relief.
Delhi’s weather stations recorded some rainfall and a drop in daytime temperatures, too.
HOW WILL THE WEATHER BE LIKE IN DELHI?
With the monsoon now active, cloudy skies and rain spells are expected to continue, with daytime temperatures expected to remain around 30-32°C, offering relief from the recent spell of heat.
The yellow alert points to moderate rain and thunderstorms in some parts, which can help further cool the city but may cause temporary waterlogging in low-lying spots and subsequent traffic disruptions.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph, with isolated spells reaching 50 kmph during intense showers that will arrive later in the day.
Residents are advised to stay updated with local forecasts, carry rain gear, and drive carefully on wet roads.
The coming days are likely to see more typical July monsoon weather with a mix of clouds and showers.
