The monsoon season brings much-needed rain, but it can also lead to flooding, waterlogging, power cuts and transport disruptions. That is why every household should have a monsoon emergency kit ready before bad weather strikes.

Keeping essential supplies in one easily accessible place can help your family stay safe, comfortable and prepared during emergencies.

From clean drinking water to basic medicines, a few simple items can make a big difference when normal services are disrupted.

DRINKING WATER AND NON-PERISHABLE FOOD

Store enough drinking water for at least two to three days, especially if your area is prone to flooding or water supply disruptions.

Keep ready-to-eat food such as biscuits, energy bars, dry fruits, canned food and instant meals that do not require refrigeration or extensive cooking. Don’t forget a manual can opener if you store canned food.

FIRST AID KIT AND ESSENTIAL MEDICINES

A first aid kit should include bandages, antiseptic solution, cotton, gauze, adhesive tape, pain relief tablets and a thermometer.

Families should also keep enough prescription medicines for at least a week, along with ORS packets and any medicines needed for children, elderly family members or people with chronic illnesses.

TORCH, BATTERIES AND POWER BANK

Power cuts are common during heavy rain. Keep a torch, extra batteries, a fully charged power bank and charging cables ready. Battery-operated lights can also be useful if outages last longer than expected.

IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS

Store copies of important documents such as identity cards, insurance papers, bank details and medical records in a waterproof folder or sealed plastic pouch. Digital copies saved securely on your phone or cloud storage can also be helpful.

HYGIENE SUPPLIES

Keep soap, hand sanitiser, wet wipes, tissues, sanitary products, garbage bags and disinfectant in your emergency kit. Cleanliness becomes even more important during the monsoon as stagnant water can increase the risk of infections.

RAIN GEAR AND PROTECTIVE ITEMS

Umbrellas, raincoats, waterproof bags and extra clothing should be easy to access. Waterproof covers for mobile phones and important electronics can help prevent damage during heavy rain.

KEEP EMERGENCY CONTACTS HANDY

Save emergency phone numbers, including local authorities, ambulance services, nearby hospitals and electricity providers. If mobile networks are affected, keep the numbers written down as well.

A monsoon emergency kit does not take long to prepare, but it can make a big difference when bad weather hits.

Checking supplies regularly and replacing expired medicines or batteries will help ensure your family is ready for the rainy season.
