Sara Cox launched her Radio 2 Breakfast Show with Lizzo’s About Damn Time.

The 51-year-old broadcaster – who has had the station’s 4-7pm Teatime slot for the last six years – opened her first morning programme at 6.30am on Monday (06.07.26) with her usual “nonsense” and has quickly settled into her new slot.

She told listeners: “It is 6:31am. It’s The Sara Cox Breakfast Show! Monday 6th July 2026. Hello to your howdys, to your dafts of…come on! You know the nonsense I love.

Sara joyfully says: “I’m actually alright! This is nice isn’t it, it’s nice isn’t it! Sophie and Whitney are already regretting watching the footie. More on that in a bit!”

The DJ then joked about the messages in her music.

She said: “Kicked off with About Damn Time, this is Finally…CeCe Peniston. No message in the music, don’t be silly! No, come on, that’s too self-indulgent!”

And Sara then jokingly played a snippet of Etta James’ At Last, before launching into Olivis Rodrigo’s Stupid Song.

Turning topical, Sara discussed England’s early morning 3-2 win over Mexico in the World Cup.

She said: “HusBEN, last night, slept downstairs so I could get a good night’s sleep. And he was like, I am going to wake up in the morning and watch the footy highlights. So don’t tell me who won, don’t tell me the score or anything. He’s laying in the front room and he just wakes up and hears a football fan coming down the street, ‘where were you when we won 3-2,’ and he’s like nooo!”

Her first guest on her first show was Toy Story 5 actor Tom Hanks.

Ahead of her debut Breakfast Show, Sara had insisted she wasn’t nervous.

She told the Sunday Times magazine: “It’s huge but I’m ready.

“I might have to bury my phone in my neighbour’s sandpit a couple of days before because I don’t like people texting me good luck, but the minute I open my mic, I’ll be fine. I’m not nervous because I know I can do a good job. I don’t want to sound arrogant but I’ve been doing radio for 28 years now…

“I just want to have a chuckle and play some brilliant songs. A good breakfast show is one that makes you laugh.”

The DJ was delighted when the opportunity came up because she was ready for a new challenge.

She said: “I think if you’re ambitious, you always want to do the next big thing.

“After seven years on a show that I absolutely love, that I give 100 per cent to every day, I was starting to feel ready for another challenge. I was ready for something new and a bit scary because I quite like that feeling. It keeps you interested and interesting.”

Sara landed the job after Scott Mills was abruptly sacked earlier this year after the BBC learned the alleged victim in a previous sexual misconduct complaint, which was closed in 2019, was under 16.
