The number of confirmed bird flu cases in Australia has ballooned to 53 after 20 fresh detections over the last 48 hours.

A silver gull in Robe on South Australia’s southeast had returned a positive result during CSIRO testing, the Department of Agriculture said on Saturday.

It was the first positive result recorded in a silver gull.

It follows 19 positive results recorded by CSIRO testers on Friday.

All 19 were recorded in greater crested terns along South Australia’s southeast coast and Kangaroo Island.

“There remain no detections in poultry or in our agricultural production system,” Australian Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Beth Cookson said.

“The risk to human health remains low.”
