Spider-Man: Brand New Day has swung to the biggest opening weekend in box office history.
Tom Holland’s latest outing as the Marvel superhero surpassed Avengers: Endgame to set a new domestic record and cementing the web-slinger’s position as one of cinema’s most valuable franchises.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the fourth Spider-Man film starring Tom, 30, as Peter Parker, debuted with $360 million at the North American box office, according to studio figures, overtaking the previous record of $357 million set by 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
The Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios blockbuster also launched to $932 million worldwide in its opening weekend, making it the second-largest global debut in history behind Avengers: Endgame.
The milestone continues Tom’s remarkable run as Spider-Man, a role he first played in 2016 before leading the standalone films Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Spider-Man: No Way Home and now Brand New Day.
Away from the Marvel franchise, Tom has also remained in the spotlight through projects including The Crowded Room, while his relationship with his wife Zendaya, 29, continues to attract widespread public attention following the couple’s confirmation they had secretly married earlier this year.
Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman said about the Spider-Man record: “Wow! 360 million thank-yous to all the filmmakers, actors, producers, and to my colleagues at Sony, who created such a fantastic film and an exceptional marketing and distribution campaign.
“Records are made to be broken, but we will take great pride in this one, for as long as we hold it.”
The film became only the second release in history to generate more than $300 million during its domestic opening weekend, joining Avengers: Endgame.
It also surpassed the previous opening weekends achieved by Spider-Man: No Way Home, which debuted with $260 million domestically, and Avengers: Infinity War, which opened to $257 million.
Brand New Day also established new opening weekend records for preview screenings and opening day takings, earning $72 million in previews before collecting $169.8 million on its first day in cinemas.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton the filmmaker behind Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the latest instalment follows the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which the world forgot Peter Parker’s identity.
The new film sees Spider-Man continuing to protect New York City while confronting a mysterious new threat.
Peter is also struggling with his evolving powers and the loss of his closest relationships after neither MJ, played by Zendaya, nor his best friend Ned, played by Jacob Batalon, remembers who he is.
Tom’s tenure as Spider-Man has seen each solo film become progressively more successful at the global box office. Spider-Man: Homecoming finished its theatrical run with $880 million worldwide, Spider-Man: Far From Home reached $1.13 billion and Spider-Man: No Way Home concluded with $1.9 billion globally.
The latest opening has fuelled expectations that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will surpass the $2bn mark worldwide during its theatrical run, a milestone achieved by only seven films in cinema history.
