Sony Pictures has dropped the bone-chilling final trailer for Insidious: Out of the Further, a milestone sixth instalment that completely flips the $740 million horror franchise on its head.
The highly anticipated supernatural thriller, written and directed by Jacob Chase, moves away from the multi-generational Lambert family saga that concluded in 2023’s Insidious: The Red Door.
Instead, it serves as a soft reboot by introducing a brand-new family – and a terrifying twist on the franchise’s established rules.
The movie stars The Haunting of Bly Manor breakout Amelia Eve as Gemma, a young mother raising her daughter in her childhood home.
Gemma discovers she has the inherited ability to astral project into ‘The Further’ – the pitch-black, purgatorial realm of lost souls and demonic entities that has defined the series since James Wan’s original 2011 masterpiece.
However, Gemma’s gift comes with a fatal consequence.
Unlike previous protagonists Josh and Dalton Lambert – who merely entered the realm while fighting to keep entities from hijacking their comatose physical bodies – Gemma discovers she can physically pull things back with her.
Once the malevolent spirits realise she can grant them permanent passage into the mortal world, reality becomes a demonic playground.
Bridging the gap between the old era and the new is franchise icon Lin Shaye, who returns as the beloved psychic medium Elise Rainier. Navigating the spirit world to pass on desperate wisdom to Gemma, Elise delivers a haunting warning in the new trailer: “When the dead rise… it’ll be the end of the living.”
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about the horrifying new direction of the film, Shaye opened up about her terrifying on-screen interactions with the film’s fresh antagonist Cyrus, played by Sam Spruell.
The 82-year-old star admitted she suffered an intensely physical reaction upon seeing the new monster on set, revealing: “(He) was truly scary. When I met him on the street, I had a visceral response, which was crazy. So it’s a whole new catalogue of people and even of ideas.”
Shaye further teased that the creature introduces a theatrical, Dracula-style weight to the lore that fans will not expect, explaining: “There’s a grandness to him. It’s sort of like Dracula. There’s this enfolding and this bigness. I did say to [Spruell] it feels like Shakespeare. It feels very otherworldly, bigger than life, but very rooted in reality. I think that’s a perfect combination…”
The film’s high-stakes premise brings an almost ensemble-style horror event to the screen, as iconic demons from the franchise’s past look set to be unleashed into our world.
Joining Eve and Shaye in the star-studded cast are Brandon Perea, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Sam Spruell, and Laura Gordon.
Produced by horror heavyweights Jason Blum and James Wan under their Blumhouse and Atomic Monster banners, Insidious: Out of the Further is set to crash into cinemas nationwide on August 21, 2026.
