Australians holidaying in Bali have been warned to be on guard after a luxury traveller claims that she woke to find a masked intruder standing at the foot of her bed.

Mira Dorenbosch and husband Jaimy were staying in a private villa when the horrifying robbery unfolded at about 5am on Sunday.

The Dubai-based influencer said that her husband initially thought a dog had entered their bedroom and kicked towards it.

But seconds later, he realised they had a stranger standing inside the room.

“A man dressed completely in black, wearing a balaclava, was standing inside our bedroom right next to our bed when we were sleeping,” she said.

“I woke up in the middle of all this.”

The couple, who are from the Netherlands and have been travelling around Bali for several weeks, said the intruder threatened them and demanded her husband’s Rolex.

Dorenbosch said the demand immediately raised more alarm bells because her husband was not wearing the expensive watch and it was not in the bedroom.

“It didn’t feel random,” she said.

The masked man eventually fled with Jaimy’s Hermes bag and the couple reported the robbery to police.

Her account has sparked a fierce debate among travellers online, with many questioning why the couple were carrying expensive belongings while holidaying in Bali.

“Why travel with expensive stuff? Are you going to enjoy or impress others … better to be safe and carefree,” one commenter wrote.

Another said: “Why would you wear a rolex in Bali!”

A third added: “lol I would say … leave the Rolex and the birkin home you don’t need to show off on holiday.”

But others pushed back against the criticism.

“So much victim blaming🥺 I am so sorry this happened to you. It sounds horrific and nobody deserves this,” one said.

Another commented: “The fact that people are blaming the victims are wild to me. Self awareness before commenting is vital.”

Dorenbosch has also questioned how the intruder knew about her husband’s Rolex, raising concerns about whether someone may have known what valuables the couple had with them.

The couple, who own a luxury real estate business in Marbella in Spain, have urged other travellers to take extra care following the incident.

“A warned person counts for two,” Dorenbosch wrote in an Instagram post.

“You always think something like this happens to someone else … until you wake up and there’s literally a masked man standing next to your bed.”

“Please be careful in Bali.”
