Inbetweeners star James Buckley has revealed he’s having to cut back on the beers and takeaways after been diagnosed with a genetic disease which puts him at risk of a cardiovascular incident.

In the latest episode of his podcast ‘The Buckleys‘, which he co-hosts with his wife Clair, the actor explained he’d had some check-ups after Clair had gone through a period of being unwell.

“I don’t want to steal your thunder Clair but I’ve also had health problems,” he teased once Clair was finished explaining how she’d been taken to hospital after suffering from severe dehydration.

“Got a genetic disease mate!” he exclaimed.

The 38-year-old went on to explain that blood tests showed he posed a risk of a cardiovascular incident due to having a genetically inherited type of blood cholesterol called Lipoprotein(a), which affects one in five people across the world.

There are typically no physical symptoms until a cardiovascular event occurs, with the condition leading to faster plaque build-up in arteries, increasing the risk of blood clotting.

Speaking on his show the sitcom star said: “I’ve had health problems […] something to do with my Lipoprotein(a). There’s nothing you can do about it.

“The doctor’s just been like: ‘You need to change’.”

Taking on board the doctor’s advice, Buckley revealed the diagnosis has made him rethink his lifestyle choices, meaning he is currently not drinking alcohol and cutting back on any unhealthy foods.

He added he is “a high risk now for a cardiovascular incident” and said: “My heart, my arteries,” before being interrupted by Clair who exclaimed: “You need to stop clogging them with KFC!”

Buckley continued: I’m not a religious man, but sometimes I feel like there is a God that sort of goes ‘that’ll teach you’.”

“I feel like I’ve been on this podcast s******* people off that don’t drink […] And now I’ve been told to rein it in.”

Despite his current ‘alcohol ban’, he admitted: “I’m going to have a beer soon […] I’m just trying to do like a little bit of a reset. We were drinking beer every day during Covid […] so we’ve had a bit of a wake-up now.”

While joking about their drinking, the couple momentarily got serious when it came to their children, with Buckley worried that his two sons would also inherit the genetic condition.

“Another little worry is that because it’s genetic my children might have it. They’re fine at their age, its when they get to my age that’s when it might become a problem,” he said.

While James has been discussing his health, talks have reportedly been advancing to bring back iconic sitcom The Inbetweeners, in which he starred as Jay.

Last month, it was reported that Netflix bosses are eager to sign Emily Atack, who plays Charlotte, for a reboot of the show.
