A custody dispute and marital discord between a Bengaluru man and his wife are being investigated as possible factors behind the killing of their two minor daughters inside a five-star hotel, police said on Tuesday.

The two girls aged 5 and 10, were allegedly strangled by their father, S G Imran, who later attempted suicide, according to police. He is currently out of danger and is undergoing treatment at a hospital.

Police said Imran had checked into the Taj hotel with his daughters on Sunday at around 5 pm. The family was reportedly staying at the hotel when the incident took place on Monday.

Hotel cleaning staff went to Imran’s room at around 4 to 4.30 pm on Monday but received no response after knocking on the door. Security personnel were alerted and the door was subsequently opened.

The two girls were found lying on the bed, while Imran was found in the bathroom. Hotel staff rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors later said he was out of danger.

A note recovered from the room has become a key part of the investigation. Police said it was not a death note because Imran survived the suicide attempt. In the note, he reportedly referred to a marital dispute with his wife and alleged that she was involved in an extramarital relationship.

Police said Imran also expressed concern over the custody of his daughters and stated that he did not want his wife to take custody of the children. He reportedly wrote that he would separate from his wife and would not be able to get custody of the girls.

Police are yet to establish whether the couple had legally divorced or whether any divorce proceedings were pending before a court. Although they had been living separately, investigators are checking their legal status.

According to police, Imran’s wife had messaged him on Monday afternoon asking him to hand over the children to her, saying she felt he was unable to take care of them.

Police said the couple had been involved in disputes and arguments, including over the custody of their children. Investigators have also questioned the wife as part of the probe.

The allegations made by Imran regarding his wife’s alleged relationship are being verified and have not been independently established.

“We are verifying the allegations and have taken up the case. We are investigating the circumstances that led to the killings. His statement will be recorded once doctors declare him fit,” a police officer said.

Investigators have sought CCTV footage from the hotel to reconstruct the sequence of events and establish what happened after Imran checked into the hotel with his daughters.

The postmortem examinations of the two girls have been completed. Police said further action will be taken after the autopsy reports are received.

Imran, a resident of Nagavara in north Bengaluru, remains under medical supervision. His statement is expected to be recorded once doctors declare him fit to speak to investigators.
