David Foster has slammed suggestions he “snubbed” Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, at a recent charity event.
The 76-year-old producer was involved in a viral moment last week when video footage of him and wife Katherine McPhee stepping up to pose with the former actress and her husband Prince Harry appeared to show him walk past Meghan’s outstretched hand without acknowledging her.
The quartet then posed for photographs together on the red carpet at the event, which was held to mark 40 years of his David Foster Foundation, and David has now hit out at speculation surrounding the “awkward moment” as he insisted he had already spoken to his “dear friends” just minutes before the footage was filmed.
He said in a statement shared with People magazine: “As the host of the David Foster and Friends foundation event, I had already greeted our friends, the Duke and Duchess, at the entrance 10 minutes before the red carpet encounter.
“They both, graciously and selflessly, gave their time and went beyond to engage with everyone. Harry and Meghan are dear friends of mine. Anyone watching can see there was no awkward moment and certainly no snub.
“It’s sad that certain media chose to deceive a red carpet encounter for clickbait. They turned simple ‘positioning’ to get the best photo into a hurtful lie.”
Katherine and Meghan, 45, attended the same school in Los Angeles, and the 42-year-old singer previously told how their husbands had struck up a “cute” friendship.
Speaking in 2020, Katherine told Access Hollywood: “My husband has a really, really beautiful relationship with Harry.
“They’re like, they’re so cute. They’re like father and son… We just stay in touch with them. But mostly, Meghan and I knew each other from childhood, but really Harry and my husband are friends. It’s really nice.”
And back in 2019, David arranged for the royal couple to stay at a house on Vancouver Island owned by one of his friends and he was happy to be able to help them find “respite” away from the spotlight.
He previously told the Daily Mail: “I felt honoured that I was able to help Meghan there because I’m a Canadian, and we’re a Commonwealth country; we’re the Crown’s. It’s important to us, so I grew up with that kind of sentiment.
“I was really happy to be able to help them to find a respite just to take a little time off.”
