A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia early Saturday, triggering an early tsunami warning and several aftershocks, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
The quake was recorded at around 4:58 a.m. local time, or 2158 GMT, at a depth of 35 km, the EMSC said. At least three aftershocks were reported following the main earthquake.
Indonesia’s geophysics agency, BMKG, issued an early tsunami warning for some regions of the country following the undersea earthquake.

Authorities were monitoring the situation and assessing the potential impact of the quake and subsequent aftershocks in affected areas.
Meanwhile, Australia’s tsunami warning centre said the earthquake posed “no tsunami threat” to the Australian mainland, islands or territories.
The earthquake struck offshore, but details on its impact in Indonesia, including any casualties or damage, were not immediately available.
