India Post marked a first on Independence Day eve as the Tricolour was delivered by drone to an Army veteran in Himachal Pradesh, covering the route from Mandi to Rehardhar.
The Department of Posts used a drone to transport the national flag from the Mandi Head Post Office to the Rehardhar Branch Post Office before it was handed over to an Army veteran.

Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia joined the event virtually on August 14 and witnessed the drone delivery, which was described as the first such use of the technology by India Post to deliver the Tricolour directly to a recipient.
The drone began its journey from the Mandi Head Post Office carrying the Tricolour parcel. After reaching Rehardhar, the postal team stationed at the branch office received the parcel and completed the delivery to the former Army personnel.
The initiative emphasised how technology could be used alongside India’s extensive postal network, particularly in places where difficult terrain can make conventional last-mile delivery challenging.
The Department of Posts also outlined plans to expand drone-based mail transmission across 150 identified routes in Himachal Pradesh and Assam. The initiative was aimed at improving connectivity to remote and difficult-to-access areas while making mail delivery more efficient.
The Mandi delivery therefore served as more than a symbolic Independence Day gesture, demonstrating how a technology more commonly associated with modern logistics could be integrated into the country’s longstanding postal system.
