IIT Gandhinagar professors Vivek Kapadia and Udit Bhatia, along with officials from the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) and Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), visited Subhash Chowk and Rajiv Chowk on Wednesday to assess waterlogging-prone areas and explore long-term solutions.
According to an official statement, the team discussed proposed technical measures to address waterlogging, including options for rainwater storage and improved drainage. The team also visited sectors 46, 47 and other areas to identify catchment zones and explore interventions that can store rainwater at source while increasing discharge and storage capacity.

A senior MCG officer said work has been expedited on a plan to install high-capacity underground storage tanks and injection wells in waterlogging-prone areas. Under the proposed system, rainwater would first be collected in storage tanks and then channelled underground through injection wells.
The plan includes high-capacity underground storage tanks, injection wells with capacities of 48-80 litres per second, a SCADA-based smart water management system and a proposed linkage with the Central Ground Water Board.
Injection wells with capacities ranging from 48 to 80 litres per second will be installed at identified waterlogging-prone locations. Their objective will be to channel maximum quantities of rainwater underground in the shortest possible time.
The proposed system will also enable immediate collection of rainwater in storage tanks, helping prevent water accumulation in vulnerable areas and reduce inconvenience to residents, the officer said.
“The initiative aims to capture and store rainwater at source, enhance groundwater recharge, improve water discharge and develop permanent solutions to waterlogging, providing a sustainable and long-term solution for Gurugram. From quick drainage to sustainable water management, the MCG and GMDA are working towards a more water-resilient Gurugram,” MCG Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya said.
