Just when you think China will catch a breath in the ongoing AI race, a new model drops in. The latest comes from Tencent. This week, the Chinese tech giant has released a preview version of Hy4, its new open-source artificial intelligence model. According to the company, Hy4 is designed for practical tasks such as coding, financial analysis, office work and scientific research.

Tencent claims that its new model, Hy4, performed slightly better than recent models from Chinese AI rivals Z.ai and Moonshot AI in its own testing. In a blind evaluation involving 163 experts and 203 engineering tasks, Hy4 scored an average of 2.99 out of 4.00. Z.ai’s GLM-5.3 scored 2.92, while Moonshot’s Kimi K3 scored 2.94. Do note that this was an internal Tencent evaluation, rather than an independent benchmark.
Now, Hy4 arrives at an interesting time for China’s AI industry. Chinese companies have been releasing increasingly capable open models at a rapid pace, with the likes of Z.ai and Moonshot AI pushing into areas once dominated by US companies. Moonshot, for instance, launched Kimi K3 last month, describing it as a 2.8-trillion-parameter open-weight model designed for advanced reasoning, coding and other demanding tasks. Z.ai has also been drawing attention with its latest GLM models, including GLM-5.3-Flash, which recently surfaced under the name Ox Alpha before the company confirmed it was behind the model.
Powers of Tencent’s Hy4
Coming back to Tencent’s Hy4 model, it is said to be considerably smaller than Kimi K3 on paper, but the company says it has made major improvements over its previous generation. Hy4 has 770 billion total parameters, with about 49 billion active for a given request, and can handle more than 1 million tokens of context. In simple terms, that means it is designed to work with very large amounts of information in a single interaction.
Tencent says Hy4 has been trained and refined for real-world work, rather than just benchmark tests. For coding, it can help with understanding, planning, debugging and validating software projects. It can also assist with financial and data analysis, create documents and presentations, and even generate playable game prototypes from natural-language instructions. The company also claims that the model has shown improvements in scientific research tasks, including mathematics, AI research and molecular dynamics.
Tencent also reveals that Hy4 helped with its own development. The company says the model participated in experiments involving training methods, data strategies and evaluation systems, then used the results to guide further rounds of optimisation. Tencent describes this as an early-stage “recursive self-improvement loop”.
In simpler words, Hy4 was not just trained by Tencent, the model itself helped Tencent figure out how to train and improve it by testing different approaches and learning from the results.
Availability of Tencent Hy4
Hy4 is now available as an open-source model and can be accessed through Tencent products including CodeBuddy, WorkBuddy, Yuanbao and ima, as well as through APIs. Tencent is offering free access to Hy4 on WorkBuddy and CodeBuddy for two weeks.
