Panic gripped in Punjab’s Ferozepur district late Saturday after four car-borne assailants opened fire in the town’s main market, killing a 45-year-old man and critically injuring a 22-year-old.
The attackers also targeted the car of newly elected Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Mamdot Nagar Panchayat president Vicky Mainiy, who escaped unhurt.
The victim, 45-year-old Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi and injured 22-year-old Harpreet Singh alias Happy, were travelling on a motorcycle when the assailants opened fire at them.

The attackers reached the market in a car and got out before firing several rounds at Gurpreet and Harpreet. Gurpreet sustained fatal injuries.
Harpreet received gunshot injuries and remained in critical condition. Doctors provided him initial treatment before referring him to a hospital in Ludhiana.
According to the information provided, Gurpreet’s family had earlier been linked to the Congress. His sister-in-law is an AAP councillor in the Mamdot Nagar Panchayat.
Vicky Many was present at the spot when the firing took place. He was travelling in his car, which was also hit by bullets, but he escaped the attack without injuries.
The incident triggered fear across Mamdot, with police reaching the spot after receiving information about the firing and starting an investigation.
Ferozepur SSP Bhupinder Singh said police had identified the accused and dispatched separate teams to arrest them. He said the preliminary investigation indicated that the attack appeared to be linked to personal enmity arising from the recent municipal elections.
Police suspect that a dispute that developed during the recently held Nagar Panchayat elections could have led to the firing.
Police have identified the accused and are conducting raids to arrest them.
