Police in Kolkata have served a notice on Trinamool Congress leader and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee in connection with a scuffle earlier this week during the removal of a billboard carrying party signage. The notice was delivered at his residence late on Saturday evening, and the investigation is underway.
Officials said Banerjee has been asked to appear before Shakespeare Sarani Police Station in connection with the case. While an officer said he was asked to appear on Tuesday noon, a senior Kolkata Police officer later told PTI that he had been asked to appear before the investigating officer on Monday.

“A notice has been served on Abhishek Banerjee in connection with the investigation. He has been asked to appear before the investigating officer on Monday. The investigation is underway, and all aspects of the incident are being examined,” the senior Kolkata Police officer told PTI.
Three FIRs have been registered over the incident, with Banerjee named as an accused in two of them, officials said. Party leaders, including Derek O’Brien and former MLA Humayun Kabir, have also been named in the FIRs. According to officials, O’Brien was served a notice on Sunday.
The incident took place on Thursday, when private guards at Banerjee’s office, his supporters and some party leaders allegedly scuffled with police and Kolkata Municipal Corporation officials as they tried to enter the building on Camac Street and remove an “unauthorised” billboard.
The billboard, bearing TMC signage and mounted on an iron structure facing the road on the top floor of the building, was later dismantled by KMC personnel after police forced their way inside.
O’Brien, who was present during the operation, rejected reports that private guards had tried to resist the officials. He described such reports as “fake news” and said the guards were posted on duty at the entrance of the building. He also alleged that the police barged into the office with an “illegal” notice, assaulted senior leaders and heckled party supporters and office staff.
Police are examining CCTV footage and other evidence, and 14 people have so far been arrested in connection with the case.
