A Melbourne father has died after allegedly being run down by his own car, while trying to stop it being stolen from outside his home.
Police allege the 68-year-old had only been inside his Blackwood Pde home in Heidelberg West for about a minute on the night of August 1, when a woman targeted his running Honda CR-V, parked outside.
As she tried to drive off, the man confronted her and a verbal altercation began.
Detectives allege the 51-year-old woman then drove away, striking the man as she fled.
He was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries and underwent emergency surgery, but died on Monday night.
In the days after the incident, Detective Acting Inspector Paul Lineham revealed the man’s family had been left devastated by what happened.
“I’ve spoken to the family … They are absolutely traumatised with the events that happened,” Inspector Lineham said.
“Incredibly angry that this happened and that the father (allegedly) got left on the road with these life-threatening injuries.”
Nearly a week later, an arrest was made while officers were executing a search warrant at a Narvick Cres property in Heidelberg West.
Police allege a vehicle in the driveway drove at them before losing control, crashing into a wall, ramming an unmarked car and hitting a tree.
A 42-year-old man and a 15-year-old girl were arrested over that incident.
Detectives then searched the home and arrested the 51-year-old Heidelberg West woman inside without incident.
She was charged on August 7 with dangerous driving cause serious injury, theft of a motor vehicle, fail to stop, fail to render assistance and unlicenced driving.
Police have since confirmed investigators will consider whether those charges should now be upgraded following the man’s death.
The woman is due to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on November 17.
