An Albany man accused of inducing a child to act as a prostitute in Perth earlier this year has attempted to apply for a suppression order, in an effort to limit his “embarrassment” and “reputational damage”.
Shayne Hans Griskonis, 50, appeared before Albany Magistrates Court on Thursday charged with inducing a child to act as a prostitute, cultivating a prohibited plant and possessing a controlled weapon.
Mr Griskonis still has not entered pleas to any of the three charges against him.
Defence counsel Monica Snowball dialled into the court over the phone, and asked for a further four-week adjournment for the defence to discuss a witness interview recorded and shared with them by police, the transcripts for which they had only just received.
She also foreshadowed two applications on Mr Griskonis’ behalf, the first being an application to reduce his reporting conditions from two days a week to one day a week, which prosecutor Sgt Meagan Diver did not oppose.
The second was an application for a suppression order.
Ms Snowball told the court Mr Griskonis ran a business in Albany and had suffered “a lot of reputational damage” and “embarrassment” after the general public learned of the charges against him, and he wanted to prohibit further reporting on his case as it progressed through the court.
Sgt Diver said the prosecuting team had not been given notice of an application for a suppression order.
Magistrate Rosemarie Myers questioned whether, since Mr Griskonis’ charges were already on the public record, the “horse has already bolted”, and whether it was worth it for the court to put a suppression order in place.
Ms Snowball said she would make written submissions to go with the application, and put it back before the magistrate at Mr Griskonis’ next appearance.
He will next appear before Albany Magistrates Court on September 24 on all charges.
