New Delhi: A picture of Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian bending lower in front of a Hindu religious leader at an event that was being attended shortly before the BRICS Summit was over went viral, with some people claiming the president was touching the latter’s legs.
While it is unclear what actually happened, some press reports quoted Iranian Embassy officials as saying the popular video and images are false.
Pezeshkian and Satishacharya Maharaj, the head of Hindu spirituality, met at a particular interracial and social dialogue reception held at The Oberoi Hotel on the outside of the BRICS Summit 2026 in New Delhi.
But what actually occurred?
According to media reports, what truly transpired was something as unimportant as Pezeshkian dropping a word he had received from another leader earlier, according to Iranian military sources. Soon enough, the Swami followed him as he bent down to pick it up. However, it has been fabricated to make it seem as though Pezeshkian was touching the Jagadguru’s feet, a custom that is practiced by Hindus but no Muslims.
The Peethadhishwar of Premeshwar Dham in Kalyanpur, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, is Jagadguru Swami Satishacharya Maharaj. Jagadguru Satishacharya shared photos with Pezeshkian on September 11 in a blog on his official Instagram account.
The Oberoi Hotel event, which included people from various social and religious backgrounds, was a part of Iran’s social and people-to-people wedding during the mountain.
