Melbourne City has thrown a career lifeline to Costa Rican international Julio Cascante, signing the experienced central defender for the 2026-27 A-League season.

Cascante, 32, has been without a club since parting ways with American Major Soccer League outfit Austin FC in January.

His most recent competitive appearance was in November last year during the MLS playoffs.

However, City football director Michael Petrillo was confident Cascante would be an “important option” for the Melbourne club.

“We’re delighted to welcome Julio to Melbourne City,” Petrillo said.

“He arrives with extensive experience at both club and international level, and we believe his

qualities are a strong fit for the way we want to play.

“Julio is comfortable in possession, reads the game well and brings a calm presence to the

heart of defence.

“He will add maturity to our defensive group and provide another important

option as we prepare for a big season ahead.”

Cascante, who spent five years with Austin, has made 14 appearances for the Costa Rican national teams.

His previous clubs also include Portland Timbers (MLS) and Costa Rican outfits Deportivo Saprissa, UCR and Orion.

“I’ve always been interested in playing in Australia, and when the opportunity came to join

Melbourne City, it felt like the perfect fit,” said Cascante, whose contract includes the option of another season.

“I’ve heard many great things about the club, the way the team plays and the ambition here.

“I’m excited to get to work with my teammates and do everything I can to contribute to a

successful season for the club and our fans.”
