Muscat: An American seaman was killed on Wednesday, September 23 when the large aircraft MV Cape Dao was attacked close to Oman while heading India.
Suraj Yadav, a 26-year-old wipers from Deoria, Uttar Pradesh, was the victim. Twenty Indians were among the 28 crew members on the vessel, according to the Forward Seamen’s Union of India ( FSUI).
MV Cape Dao was struck thrice on the port side, when near the engine area and when near the C-deck accommodations, according to FSUI. While the Royal Navy of Oman evacuated the surviving crew members, the vessel was traveling from Mina Saqr to India via the Oman course.
In a post on X, the Embassy of India in Muscat stated that it was carefully monitoring the assault and working with Omani authorities to ensure the safety of the team. It stated that the objective was in contact with the deceased’s family and confirmed the death of one American countrywide.
A cargo ship was reported to have been struck by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz earlier on Wednesday, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations ( UKMTO ). Two casualties were reported as a result of the vessel’s flames and evacuation, which caused the ship to drift rudderless after its staff was evacuated.
While authorities looked into the affair, the UKMTO advised arteries operating in the area to use caution when moving through the area and report any suspicious activity.
FSUI seeks to safeguard American sailors.
FSUI wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the attack to request that Yadav’s remains be returned to Deoria, along with support and time-bound payment for his home.
Additionally, the coalition demanded the formation of a permanent National Crisis Management Team under the leadership of the prime minister, consisting of the ministers of foreign affairs, the defense ministry, the navy, the government of ports, shipping, and waterways, the secretary general of shipping, and the unions representing seafarers.
In addition, it requested maritime security, rapid response, and escorts for Indian staff members operating in the Gulf of Oman, the Red Sea, the Black Sea, and the Indian Ocean.
Additionally, FSUI demanded that Indian missions launch the proposed BRICS Seafarers ‘ Emergency Support Network and that work be made to track down sailors who have been reported missing.
