Cinema-goers have not been able to avoid Aussie hunk Jacob Elordi on screen in recent years, yet students at a UK university were seeing far more of him as a college-led lookalike competition became a viral hit.
Up to 500 students gathered at the University of Bristol’s College Green in search of a local substitute for the global film star, with the winning contestant a 17-year-old girl donning a moustache who preferred not to be named.
Elordi himself famously played an English university student in Emerald Fennell’s cult 2023 film Saltburn.
The tongue-in-cheek competition was organised by Overheard at UoB, a social media community covering life and experiences at the English university.
Participants were required to walk a runway and offer their best Aussie accents as they impersonated the Queenslander.
Jamie Crook, a veterinary student labelled Jacob 1, said his likeness to Elordi had bolstered his dating life.
“For the better half of seven years, since The Kissing Booth came out, Jacob Elordi has carried my dating career,” he told the BBC.
“Also, shout out to my barber. Every time he cuts my hair I show him a picture of Jacob Elordi and he just sorts it out.
“You’ve got to go with what works.”
The enigmatic Aussie is often photographed in public exhibiting any combination of a cap, moustache, sunglasses, tote bag, and mullet, yet always appears well presented.
Joey Lush, labelled Jacob 4, might argue he best physically resembles the Frankenstein star, but blamed his accent having to settle for second place.
Mr Lush said he had gathered outfit inspiration from Pinterest, and topped off his look off by “grabbing a tote bag from the fresher’s fair”.
“He’s a very stylish guy, so I tried my best,” the student said.
“I did not realise what I was signing up for — I was a bit nervous going up.”
A gracious loser, Mr Lush said he had clocked the eventual winner in the line up and felt “she was the only one I wouldn’t have been . . hurt about losing to”.
“I think it was her moustache that sold it,” he said.
