Fremantle icon Nat Fyfe will be at the MCG for Saturday’s grand final and will get a hero’s welcome from the passionate purple army when he completes a lap of honour before the game.
Fyfe has only been seen at one AFL game this season, and that was in Brisbane when the Dockers beat the Lions at the Gabba. His former teammates were elated to see him in the rooms after that win, greeting him with hugs.
But after retiring last season following a decorated career that included two Brownlow Medals, Fyfe will take part in the motorcade of retiring greats before the game.
He and close friend James Aish will lead off the motorcade at 1.33pm EST/11.33am WST.
Fyfe played 248 games during an outstanding career and inspired his team to so many memorable wins.
He and Aish’s car will be followed in order by: Steven May, Alex Sexton, Tom Liberatore, Jason Johannisen Tom McDonald, Jake Melksham, Nathan Broad, Dion Prestia, Adam Treloar, Liam Jones, Dylan Shiel, Tom Mitchell, Todd Goldstein, Rhys Stanley, Taylor Walker, Steele Sidebottom, Sam Frost and field umpire Mathew Nicholls.
Seeing Fyfe up close in an AFL arena for the first time since the Dockers lost their elimination final to Gold Coast at Optus Stadium will have Fremantle fans even more excited.
Fyfe played in the 2013 grand final and joins a star-studded list of former Fremantle greats who have travelled to Victoria for the game.
Former captains Matthew Pavlich and David Mundy were at the grand final parade on Friday. Hayden Ballantyne, Lee Spurr, Nick Suban and Zac Dawson were all spotted in the crowd during Captain’s Run at the MCG.
Shaun McManus will hand over the premiership cup if Fremantle win. Daniel Bandy, Garrick Ibbotson and Roger Hayden were all on the same flight which landed in Melbourne on Thursday.
