An Instagram romance that began with a friend request and led to a temple marriage ended in a shocking public humiliation in Uttar Pradesh’s Hardoi, where a 37-year-old man was allegedly tonsured, garlanded with shoes and held captive for hours after a dispute over the woman’s alleged relationship with another man.
The incident, which took place on September 27 in Gangpur village, came to light after a video showing the victim pleading for mercy with folded hands went viral on social media. Police have registered a case and launched a search for the accused.

According to Narendra, a resident of Mainpuri district, he met Sonia Yadav through Instagram around two-and-a-half years ago. After speaking for about eight days, the two met at Gaurighat in Kannauj and later got married in a temple. Narendra claimed they lived together for nearly two-and-a-half years despite opposition from their families.
Narendra alleged that he later discovered Sonia had been married twice before. According to him, she has three children from her first marriage and six from her second marriage to Munna Yadav, taking the total number of her children to nine.
The dispute escalated after Narendra travelled from Bahadurgarh to meet Sonia on September 25. He alleged that while checking her mobile phone, he found evidence of her being in contact with a fourth man. The revelation triggered an argument between the two. Narendra further claimed that discussions during the confrontation also touched upon the termination of an alleged five-month pregnancy. In a fit of anger, he admitted slapping Sonia.
According to Narendra, Sonia then lured him to her village in Hardoi on the pretext of taking a child along. He alleged that once he reached Khurrampurwa-Gangpur village, Sonia and her second husband, Munna Yadav, detained him after learning about their relationship.
Narendra alleged that the duo shaved half of his head, cut off half of his moustache using scissors and a razor, forced him to wear a garland made of shoes and held him captive for several hours. He claimed he repeatedly begged for mercy while those present recorded videos of the ordeal instead of helping him.
The video, which surfaced online on Monday, shows the victim crying and pleading with folded hands as he is publicly humiliated.
Narendra also claimed Sonia had borrowed around Rs 40,000 from him on different occasions and that they remained in contact even after he dropped her at Gaurighat in July this year due to health issues. He said the two continued meeting at a hotel in Gursahaiganj several times afterward.
Harpalpur Circle Officer Praveen Kumar said the incident occurred on September 27 and came to police notice after the video went viral.
“The victim, Narendra of Mainpuri, and a woman from Gangpur were known to each other. A dispute reportedly arose over financial transactions, following which the woman’s relatives assaulted and misbehaved with him,” the officer said.
Police said a case has been registered on the basis of Narendra’s complaint and raids are underway to arrest the accused. Officials added that nobody would be allowed to take the law into their own hands and strict legal action would be taken against those involved.
