“India can create jobs through ideas and enterprise which is the only way for our country to become a developed nation in the future,” Infosys founder N R Narayana Murthy said while addressing students at O.P. Jindal Global University’s 17th University Day.

Murthy, who was the chief guest at the event, spoke on “Ethical Leadership, Transformative Growth & Technology – The Infosys Story & the Future of India”, highlighting the role of entrepreneurship, innovation and ethical leadership in India’s development.

His remarks placed job creation at the centre of India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation, with ideas and enterprise emerging as key drivers of employment and economic growth.

‘THE SOFTEST PILLOW IS A CLEAR CONSCIENCE’

Addressing the young audience, Murthy also emphasised the importance of values in professional and entrepreneurial life. He said hard work, honesty, respect and integrity must come before personal gain.

“The softest pillow is a clear conscience,” he said, adding that doing the right thing becomes easier when it is treated as the benchmark for decision-making.

Murthy said the culture instilled through family, peers and the surrounding environment plays an important role in shaping individuals. He urged younger professionals to follow sound principles and make decisions that earn the respect of society and stakeholders.

‘FAILURE IS A SERIES OF STEPS TOWARDS SUCCESS’

Recalling his own entrepreneurial journey, Murthy said his first company did not work out before he went on to establish Infosys. He used the experience to underline the importance of learning from failure.

“Failure is like a series of steps towards success. If you learn lessons from it and do not repeat those mistakes, then you can overcome failure,” he said.

Murthy compared entrepreneurship with scientific research, saying scientists and researchers do not give up when they fail to get results. Instead, they introspect, learn from setbacks and begin again.

He advised students not to allow failure to lead to inaction, but to think rationally, remain focused and make another attempt.

The University Day also saw the release of the JGU Research Report 2026. Prof Arpita Gupta, Dean of Research, said JGU had recorded 11,000 research articles, including nearly 800 student contributions to Scopus-indexed research publications. The research covers areas including AI, smart cities, climate change, entrepreneurship, health, gender and micro-credit.
