A woman has been tased and arrested by police after she allegedly stabbed a man with a knife out the front of a popular cinema in Sydney’s inner-west.

Police were called to the Dendy Cinema at the corner of Erskineville Road and King Street in Newtown at about 11.40am on Monday following reports of a stabbing.

Upon arrival, officers were told a 48-year-old man had “allegedly been stabbed in the hand by an unknown woman”.

The man was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Police searched the area and located the 27-year-old woman, who they say was still armed with a knife.

“Police directed the woman to drop the knife; however, when she allegedly failed to follow the police direction, a taser was used and she was arrested,” a police spokeswoman said.

Local bookstore manager Rachel Goldrich said she became aware of the incident when a group of women ran into the store seeking shelter.

”Some women came in and said ‘Run, there’s a lady with a knife,” she said.

”I could hear her yelling in the middle of the road so I stepped outside to have a look and could see she had a knife.

”I heard her yelling earlier and arguing with someone down the road but I didnt think much of it because that happens all the time.”

Ms Goldrich said the woman was walking between the traffic as cars veered away from her, before eventually a number of police cars arrived with their sirens blaring.

”They pulled up, jumped out, told her to put the knife down, and when she didn’t they tased her twice.”

Police said the woman was taken to Newtown police station.

Inquiries are ongoing and no charges have been laid.

A crime scene has been established, and King Street between Wilson Street and Church Street remains closed.

A number of public transport services have been disrupted and rerouted.
